The Parnassus Preserved Collection comprises nineteenth century portraits of prominent literary and public figures, made by well-known photographers and photographic studios of the day; subjects include American, English, French, and Scottish authors, poets, and humorists, editors and newspapermen, historians, philosophers, naturalists, various teachers, college presidents and faculty, composers, and popular songwriters; also featured are political figures, various U.S. and European cabinet officers, legislators, diplomats, Army officers from the U.S. Civil War, and numerous abolitionists and suffragists. Major photographers include Abraham Bogardus, Mathew Brady (many published by Edward and H.T. Anthony), W. & D. Downey, C.D. Fredericks, Elliott & Fry, J. Gurney & Son, the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Co., Jose Maria Mora, Felix Nadar, Pierre Petit, Charles Reutlinger, George Rockwood, Napoleon Sarony, and G.K. Warren.
